The MMR

This topic tends to be very controversial. However, now that Edward is one, I am faced with the decision. I would appreciate any advice or information on this shot. How do you feel about the MMR vaccination? Would you vaccinate your child with this shot knowing the things that you've heard in the last year or so? Have you or your child been affected negatively by getting this shot? Also, are there other vaccinations that you have concerns about? Is it necessary to have the varicella vaccination? What do you think?

I know I've already talked to you about this, but my best advice is for you and Johnny to research both sides of the issue. Really pray about it - that the Lord would give both of you a peace one way or another. That's the only way you can have rest in knowing your decision is right.

And 12 mo. isn't magical, so wait a little bit if you want.

I just remember when I had my MMR. Maybe it was my tetnus, or maybe something else. It was really painful and I had to work hard to have fun at Fuller Hall. I'm pretty sure I cried and was a bit dramatic. I don't want Edward to go through all the pain!!! Sorry I don't have a serious answer for you.

This is an area many parents struggle with. I really think that each couple must do their own research and go before the Lord - He can give you peace about the decision! We chose to not vaccinate our kids at all, at least while they were younger. Now, however, that they are older, we are going to spread them out and do some so that they will be free to go on the mission field or wherever the Lord would choose to lead them. It was a tough decision, but one that the Lord really gave me peace about. I'll pray for His leading for you :)

Interesting time to ask this question! Bella got the MMR at her 18 month check up (March 11), I waited from 12 months. Well, 10 days later she came down with a slight case of the measles in reaction to the shot, which I guess happens to 2% of children. Symptoms: enlarged lymph node, spots covering her body (including inside her mouth), irritated area where the shot was given, and off and on again fever. The spots came on Friday and are just now disappearing. We could tell she was feeling horrible until about yesterday I'd say.
I was/ am really upset because I had asked my ped. if I could have the shots separately and she said they didn't do that. In the future, I will look for a dr. to do them separately.
Now, even after having this happen, when I read what COULD happen if she did get measles, mumps or rubella it is MUCH worse- can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage. So, now that I have had some time to process, I am reminded at how fortunate our country is to offer such vaccines.
Summary: Personally, I would wait until Edward is older (he is small for his age too, didn't you say?), and I would ask about getting the shots separately which is supposed to minimize bad reactions. I am still kicking myself for now pushing this because it was my instinct. I hope that you have peace with your decision!

Shayna, that is really scary. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this matter. It feels like such a big decision to make. I agree with you all about delaying the MMR until he is a bit older. I also hope that studies will be more conclusive in the near future. I will be curious as to how many Dr's actually separate the doses in the MMR. I'll let you know what my Dr. says.

Both my boys had it, and they both had a reaction of a small rash, but neither seemed to feel bad, and there were no other reactions. I would probably go ahead and do it again, if we are blessed with any more kids in the future, but I agree with you that it's a LOT to think about and pray about!

Adison, got the MMR about 13 months I guess and she is pretty petite. I just weighed the benefits against the risk and it seemed the best route for us personally. She maybe ran a 1 or 2 degree temperature and was achy a couple days- not fun but nothing serious.

hmm, i didnt know this was even an issue!my kids never had a reaction.
i am with the others though, that said the risks of the side affects outweigh the actual diseases. not too long ago, these diseases were fatal or life threatning with horrible effects. we have something to counter them. fever, spots and discomfort arent fun for anyone, but they are better than the alternative.
